Guilty Plea in Campground Slaying

One of two men charged with murder following a fatal shooting at a Pershing County campsite last May pleaded guilty on Tuesday. Matt Hutchinson, 18, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and acknowledged he shot the victim, George Moritz, who was 19 years old at the time of his death. Moritz died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The plea was part of a negotiated settlement with the Pershing County District Attorney’s Office, which spared the defendant three additional felony charges. In addition, the Humboldt County district attorney agreed not to pursue prosecution on charges relating to a drive-by shooting that occurred before the murder. In a statement following the hearing, Pershing County District Attorney Jim Shirley said the plea agreement "ensured justice is served" for a crime the Nevada Legislature had determined was "the most serious crime a person can commit." The hearing took place in the Sixth Judicial District Court and Hutchinson was before Judge Richard Wagner. The defendant said he was able to track down the victim to Sonoma Canyon, a popular camping spot 10 miles south of Winnemucca in Pershing County. At that time, the victim was sleeping in a large tent with several other young people. Hutchinson admitted in court he had a gun belonging to the co-defendant, Nick Andrews, which he used to beat the defendant. The defendant went on to describe how he and Andrews hid the evidence, which included the gun, bullets, and their shoes, behind Andrews’ house. Once the testimony was completed, a sentencing hearing was set for Jan 12, at which time Judge Wagner will determine if the defendant will serve life in prison with or without the possibility of parole.

Albertsons’ Stores to Change Hands

Ten Albertsons stores in Northern Nevada will change ownership in February pending final approval of the acquisition by Modesto-based Save Mart Supermarkets. Save Mart officials said Yesterday they expect no changes in staffing, including an estimated 500 or so employees at the seven Albertsons markets in Reno-Sparks and three in Carson City. Alicia Rockwell, spokeswoman for family-owned Save Mart, said it will take six months for the stores’ conversion. Of Save Mart Supermarkets’ current 124 stores, 75 operate under the Save Mart banner, five under the S-Mart name and 44 as Food Maxx stores. Last January, Boise-based Albertsons was sold for $17.4 billion and carved up three ways among a consortium of buyers. A group of investors led by New York-based Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired 655 of the supermarkets, including Nevada and California, keeping the Albertsons name. No purchase price for the California and Nevada stores by Save Mart was disclosed. The Albertsons store in Winnemucca is not a part of the acquisition.
