Big Winds Through the Silver State

What do you get when you pile up a lot of very cold air against a lot of very warm air? You get a trip from Reno to Winnemucca to go pick up your outdoor lawn furniture, blown there courtesy of 80-plus mph winds. That's what we experienced Yesterday, as another in a series of big wind events charged through western Nevada. Today, all that cold air will drop the snow level to the valley floor. Although most of the moisture will have pushed off to the east of us, we will have enough cold and unstable air to spring up a few snow showers here and there before the day is over. The going could still be pretty tough over the mountains. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra. But conditions should ease by Thursday, with pretty benign weather for the New Year's weekend for a change.
