Battle Mountain Study Due in Spring

The latest plans for a private ski resort on Battle Mountain could destroy habitat for lynx, critics said. Colorado Wild has evaluated the proposal by Ginn Co., which wants to build the resort south of Minturn, and submitted its conclusions to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is studying the proposal and ways to reduce its potential effects on wildlife. Ginn Co. has proposed building 1,700 homes, a golf course and 1,100 acres of ski terrain on and around Battle Mountain. Lynx are listed as threatened by the federal government and as endangered by the state Division of Wildlife, which has tracked lynx moving across the site of the proposed development. A Ginn Co. study found no traces of lynx in the area but said the project would result in habitat loss and could endanger lynx by increasing auto traffic along U.S. Highway 24. The largest population of the cat can be found in the San Juan Mountains, where lynx were reintroduced beginning in 1999 under a state program. Limiting the number of homes built and other changes could ease the effect on lynx, according to Ryan Bidwell, Colorado Wild director. A draft of the Fish and Wildlife Service environmental study is expected in the spring, with a public comment period to follow and a final draft expected six months later.
